Ghost of Yōtei: PlayStation Revives High-Profile Games

PS5 fans and opponents rarely agree.

But one particular complaint which has been expressed by both sides.

"Why are there so few games?"

High-cost, story-driven blockbusters from first-party teams have traditionally been the foundation to PlayStation's gaming success.

In the last generation era, players enjoyed a steady stream of narrative-driven experiences, but this has seemed more like a slow drip since last year's Spider-Man 2.

However, the company's latest title – Ghost of Yōtei – marks a reversion to its successful triple-A style.

The Reason for So Long?

The studio's latest project is a follow-up to the earlier feudal Japan-set adventure Ghost of Tsushima, among the last big PS4-exclusive releases from Sony.

"Video games do take a considerable duration to make, so it's an enormous part of your career," explains Nate.

Ghost of Yōtei moves the action a hundreds of miles northward, to the Honshū region region, and the setting a hundreds of years forward, to the year 1603.

This time, the plot centers on the protagonist Atsu, a heroine on a quest to obtain retribution against the group of six – a band of rulers responsible for her kin's death.

Building on a prior title to develop from, it's not quite a totally new beginning but, Fox clarifies, the project is nevertheless a massive effort.

Simply introducing a different main character, for example, needs input from writers, animation artists and design artists, to cite a handful of the positions involved.

Backstage there are many, many more team members.

A Vast Crew Undertaking

While the developer has about 200 team members at its headquarters near Washington, numerous others are involved in its titles.

The credits for Ghost of Tsushima, for example, included around eighteen hundred names.

Several of these are from other countries, or from outside companies that specialise in certain specialized fields.

"Developing a game calls for various diverse abilities, from highly technical experts... to individuals who are highly focused on emotions, like our story team," says Fox.

"Plus all these groups operate in harmony. It's similar to leading an orchestra.

"You must have each pieces coming together."

Fox states that a staggering array of elements can go into a individual scene – from soundtrack to the code that ensures particles float over the environment at a critical moment.

"All these teams have to have a awareness of the end goal," says Fox.

An Adjustment in Strategy

Strategic vision is an aspect fans have criticized Sony of not having in the last few years.

With its previous leader, the former CEO, the division began production on a dozen online multiplayer games, referred to as "ongoing" games in the gaming sector.

Some of the most famous titles, such as the popular shooter, the sandbox platform and the military shooter, retain users hooked for long periods and generate substantial revenues of revenue.

PlayStation has had success in the area with the recent Helldivers II, but one disastrous flop with another game, which was shut down merely a fortnight after its launch.

Sony has subsequently halted live-service projects based on a number of its biggest IPs, including God of War and The Last of Us.

Targeting the online arena is a approach the company has acknowledged is not entirely "progressing well", but it's explained certain games with connected modes, such as the racing series and MLB simulation MLB: The Show, have done nicely.

The main attractions of its most recent showcase stream were an upcoming game, a successor to 2021's Returnal, and the long-awaited Wolverine game from Spider-Man maker Insomniac – both story-driven experiences.

Discussion and Scrutiny

Big games can also be magnets for debate, as Sucker Punch not long ago found when a employee's joke about the demise of political activist personality Charlie Kirk caused a outcry.

The company eventually let go the individual responsible, and founder a senior figure commented that "applauding or joking about a person's death is a unacceptable for us", when asked about it.

Some conservative gaming influencers have also targeted Ghost of Yōtei for featuring a heroine.

The director explains it was an "unusual decision", but crucial to the tale the team aimed to tell of an outsider resisting society's norms.

When the adventure unfolds, the protagonist's myth as an vengeful spirit – a wrathful entity featured in Japan's tradition – spreads.

"Players assume there's no way this woman might have taken out members of the Yōtei Six without she is a mythical {creature|
