Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad But Joe McCarthy Left Out

Rugby team selection news

Returning manager the Ireland coach has selected captain Doris in his Ireland team for the autumn Tests, but Joe McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to Chicago as "cover".

After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous meeting, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly experienced squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting fly-half spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the third fly-half chosen as the coach opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's three league games so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, while veteran Northern province second row Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for Doris if the captain does not regain fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in the capital on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
